The speakers
Salah El Mestikawy has spent his entire career (since 1978) working in the neurosciences, particularly neurotransmission. He is an expert in molecular biology, biochemistry and anatomy using rodent and human models. His team played a pioneering role in the discovery of vesicular glutamate transporters (VGLUT). Il is also a research associate professor with the VGLUTeam. Salah El Mestikawy has published over 100 papers in international peer-reviewed journals. Since 2008, he has held a professorship at McGill University (Montreal, Canada).
Born in Haiti, where he began his career as a journalist with the weekly newspaper Le Petit Samedi soirDany Laferrière fled to Quebec in 1976 to escape the Duvalier dictatorship. A passionate writer, he has penned many books, including How to make love with a nigger without getting tired, l'Enigme du retour that have become famous. But Dany Laferrière's artistic commitment did not stop there: he also wrote scripts and directed audiovisual productions (films, documentaries, adaptations). Today, Dany Laferrière's works are known the world over.
He has been a member of the Académie Française since 2013.
A graduate of Sciences Po Paris with a Master's degree in political sociology, Guillaume Caline heads up the Public Issues and Opinion division at the Verian research institute (formerly Kantar Public). A specialist in public opinion and communication research, he helps public bodies to understand their citizens and users.
A graduate of Sciences Po and holder of a master's degree in social law, Gilles Finchelstein was an adviser to Pierre Mauroy when the latter was First Secretary of the Socialist Party, then technical adviser in the ministerial cabinets of Lionel Jospin's government. He was also political adviser to Pierre Moscovici, Minister for European Affairs, from 2000 to 2002.
Gilles Finchelstein also has several books to his credit, including The world after, an unprecedented crisis which won the La Tribune and HEC awards for best business book and the Prix de l'Essai de L'Express.
In 2022, he became Secretary General of the Fondation Jean-Jaurès after having been its Director General for twenty-two years.
A former teacher, school principal and school psychologist, Ernestine Ronai has been in charge of the Observatoire départemental des violences envers les femmes de Seine Saint-Denis since 2002. She was also national coordinator of the Interministerial Mission for the Protection of Women Victims of Violence (MIPROF) until 2017. Today, she is regarded as a pioneer in the fight against feminicide in France.
Laurence Tubiana is a French economist and diplomat. She is Professor and Director of the Sustainable Development Chair at Sciences Po. In 2001, she founded the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations. Since 2012, she has co-chaired the Board of Directors of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). She also chairs the Board of Directors of the French Development Agency (AFD). She joined the UN Scientific Advisory Board at the end of 2013. In 2014, Laurence Tubiana was appointed Special Representative of the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Laurent Fabius, for COP 21. She was also ambassador in charge of climate change negotiations until the end of 2016.
Professor of History at Sciences Po Paris. David Colon has been a member of the administration at Sciences Po since 2003, where he is responsible for preparing students for the agrégations in history and geography. He is also the author and director of a collection of textbooks published by Belin.
